The holiday season kicks off in late November, and the long Thanksgiving weekend is a popular time for a getaway. Some travelers will seek sunny destinations like Jamaica, Los Cabos, or Florida, while others embrace the holiday spirit with a trip to festive spots like New York City. Lively festivals, lush beach resorts, and national parks draw travelers to places near and far, so whether you’re looking for a quick weekend getaway or a longer trip abroad, we’ve got you covered. Here are the best places to travel in November in the United States and around the world.

North Queensland, Australia

It’s spring in the Southern Hemisphere, and November borders the sunny dry season and the more humid season, with temperatures around 80 degrees. Snorkeling and diving in the Great Barrier Reef is a once-in-a-lifetime thrill, and visitors can get there from Cairns in an hour or two. (Some choose to enjoy the Great Barrier Reef on land with a road trip starting in Cairns.) Another Queensland attraction, the Kuranda Train and Skyrail takes guests on a 90-minute ride through tropical rainforest, past waterfalls, and into the Barron Gorge for a scenic, exciting rail journey. The spectacle of coral spawning — a burst of color and a vibrant sign of life in the Great Barrier Reef — takes place in November around the full moon. Stay nearby at Shangri-La The Marina, Cairns for a convenient base for exploring the area.

New York City, New York

Whether you visit for shopping, Broadway shows, museums, or restaurants, New York City never disappoints. November begins the holiday season, always a festive time in the Big Apple. There’s a chill in the air as New York’s famous window displays and holiday markets attract crowds, and the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade (Nov. 23) and the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree lighting (Nov. 29) celebrate the season. Phoenix, Arizona

Both Phoenix and Scottsdale are home to gorgeous hotels, starry skies, stunning scenery, and perfect November weather for being outdoors, so you can hit the golf course, lounge by the pool, or hike a scenic path during your autumn trip. In Scottsdale, Canal Convergence (Nov. 3-12) is an exciting light, water, and art event along the waterfront with live music, food, and more. The Florida Keys, Florida

The 125-mile island chain at the southern tip of Florida is celebrating its bicentennial this year. Sunny weather, clear-blue waters, and lots of things to do draw visitors to the islands throughout the year. Visitors can go diving and snorkeling in the coral barrier reef or at Key Largo’s John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park, the first undersea park in the U.S. There’s plenty to do on dry land as well, and film fans may want to arrive for the Key West Film Festival (Nov. 15-19). The Ahwahnee Hotel is open year round with renovations set to be completed in October; the historic property is wonderful to see even if you don’t spend the night. Tenaya at Yosemite, set deep in the sequoia forest, is also open in November with a variety of accommodations including suites, cabins, and cottages. New Orleans, Louisiana

Mild autumn weather with a chance of rain makes November a pleasant time in New Orleans. Along with beignets, po’boys, and gumbo, there are lots of reasons to visit. The city’s Caribbean heritage is celebrated with dance, music, and cuisine at the Bayou Bacchanal (Nov. 3-4). The New Orleans Film Festival is set for Nov. 2-7 with parties, events, and panels in venues across the city. The acclaimed National WWII Museum will open a new wing called the Liberation Pavilion, exploring the end of the war, the Holocaust, and the postwar years, with a grand opening on Nov. 3.
